Youth Theater Workshop at the Open Eye

The Open Eye Theater in Margaretville will offer the Youth Theater Workshop to kids from the age of six to 18. This year, award winning playwright John Newman has been commissioned to write a play especially for this event. His play is called “The End of Oz” and it is divided into three sections, one for each week of the workshop series. There are morning and afternoon classes offered each week of the series.
The workshop series is a program in which kids learn theater through games, improvisation and creative movement. The kids in the workshop get a lot more out of it than learning about the theater. According to 11-year-old Callie Cline of Newburgh, who attended the workshop last year, “I made lots of great friends and the costumes are really fun.”
At least one of the students, Eduardo Gomez of Margaretville, said he wants to be an actor when he grows up and can’t wait to take another Youth Theater Workshop.
The first week of the YTW will be led by Monica Wildermuth and Amie Brockway. Wildermuth has served as an actor, stage manager or director for several Open Eye Theater productions over the past four years and has served as a teacher for the Youth Theater Workshop as well as stage manager for performances in a collaborative presentation between The Open Eye and the Margaretville Central School.
Amie Brockway, creative director of The Open Eye Theater in Margaretville, has directed more than 40 plays, 20 of them premier productions; 15 touring productions and dozens of reading and workshop presentations. She has also written and adapted numerous plays for the stage.
The second and third weeks of the Youth Theater Workshop will be led by Brockway and playwright John Newman. Dr. Newman has taught and directed theater at Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah for the past 16 years. As a playwright Newman has received a number of awards, including the Rocky Mountain Theater Association Play- writing Award and the America College Theater Festival Meritorious Achievement Award.
Week one: July 28 - August 1.
Week two: August 4 - 8.
Week three: August 11 - 15.
Students can attend either the morning or afternoon session for $100 or both for $150. There are additional discounts for additional weeks. Because of The Open Eye’s relationship with the Empire State Partnership for nurturing the arts, students who attend Margaretville and Andes central schools will receive a 40% discount on the tuition.
