Wildcats top MCS in tourney

Tess Svoboda was not happy at halftime of the Margaretville Booster Club Championship Girls’ Basketball Tournament Saturday.  The home team trailed Hunter-Tannersville, 18-7, and the Margaretville small forward was determined to do something about it.

After the Wildcats put back a missed shot for the first basket of the second half, to expand their lead to 13, Svoboda went to work. Her shot from the top of the key bounced off the front of the rim and into the basket. She drove down the lane for a score and then banked in a runner down the right hand side of the lane. Just like that, the Hunter lead was down to seven points, 20-13, and the Blue Devils were back in the game.

Svoboda’s scoring surge was as close as the Blue Devils would get.  Hunter was simply too strong with balanced scoring that included many put backs and an aggressive half-court pressing defense.  The Wildcats went on a 12-point tear and were never headed, taking the championship trophy, 40-19.

Svoboda netted nine points for Margaretville.
The Blue Devils used a 10-2 third quarter Friday to pull away from Andes, 43-32, to reach the title game.  Once again, Svoboda was at the top of the Blue Devils’ scoring list netting 12 points.  Sami Hunt matched Svoboda’s point total and pulled down 14 rebounds for the victors.  Annette Hogan had 11 more.

Shianne Coss scored 12 points and Kelsey Little had eight for the Mountaineers.
