Wasily Sawchenko, 84, of Depot Street, Fleischmanns died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, Long Island. Wasily was born on Oct. 15, 1924 in Russia, son of the late Elia and Domna Krasnolocowa Sawchenko.
He immigrated to the New York City metropolitan area in 1954. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and was a machinist for GAL, a company that serviced elevators.
He loved the outdoors and had a special talent for fixing most anything. He was good at working with his hands and enjoyed his gardens. He carved intricate plates and wooden eggs, as he had learned to do in his native Russia.
He retired in 1989, and after 25 years, made his summer residence into his retirement home in 1995.
Surviving are his wife Olga Nitchik Sawchenko, a son Alexander of Long Beach, and two grandsons.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at 11a.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia with the Very Reverend Nicholi Babijtchouk of the Church of All Saints in Pine Bush officiating.
Burial will be in the Clovesville Cemetery.
