Walter H. Kaufmann, 71, of Garfield, N.J., died on Thursday, April 24, 2008.
His career as an electrician with IBEW Local 3 of New York City spanned 50 years.
A passionate outdoorsman, his interests included skiing, cycling, hiking, sailing and gardening in the mountains, lakes and nature, an environment he loved best.
As a certified ski instructor with Professional Ski Instructors of America (P.S.I.A.) for 40 years, he taught at many ski centers but never more proudly than at Highmount Ski Center. He was a sportsman that knew no end. An enthusiastic cyclist since his youth, he rode extensively throughout New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Utah.
While raising his children he spent summers with the German Ski Club of New York on Lake Stahahe in Harriman State Park. With the Alpine Ski Club of Fleischmanns, he spent his winters skiing and his summers cycling and gardening his favorite crop, garlic.
He was joyful around children and will be missed by his grandchildren.
Walter lived his life trying to be the best at every endeavor. He was admired by his fellow skiers, sailors, cyclists, gardeners, garlic lovers, family and loved ones. He will always be loved, missed and remembered by his companion and mate, Joanne Ruemler; Hilde Kaufmann, former wife with whom he raised three sons, Walter Jr., Harold, Paul and daughter Lore Conway; twin brother Hank and sister Karen.
A memorial service was celebrated at The Palisades on the Hudson River near Alpine, N.J., where his family first enjoyed the mountains and nature.
