VOCO plays Sunday at Denver church
Roxbury — One of the most extraordinary vocal groups performing roots music today (they were named #1 a cappella group in the U.S. in 2007), Moira Smiley and VOCO, will be at The Roxbury Arts Group’s welcoming venue Old School Baptist Church located in Denver on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m.
Moira Smiley and VOCO is a visionary blend of voices - redefining harmony singing with the power and physicality of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Béla Bartók and the delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, accordion and body percussion.
With the energy of street singing and the elegance of a string quartet, this extraordinary ensemble of musicians led by Moira Smiley, share a passion for spreading powerful, emotional music with lush four-part vocal harmony, cello, accordion and banjo. Their original improvisation-built songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe, VOCO is sweet, hard-driving Americana mixed with crooked eastern European dance and dissonance. It’s all rounded out with body-stompin’ percussive movement and joyous, magnificent, hair-raising harmonies - music that mourns and dances at the same time. Moira Smiley travels the world as a vocalist and creates music for dance, theatre and film. Her voice, improvisations and compositions can be heard on feature films, documentaries, BBC, PBS, and on over 40 recordings of warped traditionals and new song craft.
Ariella Forstein is a vocalist and performance artist specializing in Cantorial, classical, world and improvisational music. A world music percussionist and composer, Ariella has created, produced and performs with numerous bands and ensembles.
