Virginia "Ruth" Hill
Virginia (Ruth) Hill, 86, of Margaretville, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville. She was born April 10, 1923, in Big Indian, the daughter of Andrew and Virginia Bryant Thompson. She married Robert Hill on August 11, 1946. They were married for 63 years.
Ruth attended Fleischmanns High School and graduated post-graduate in 1939 from Margaretville Central School.
She attended New Paltz Teachers College, then entered Vassar Brothers College of Nursing, graduating in 1943. She moved into army Cadet Nurses, and was assigned in Atlantic City “England General Hospital” until the end of World War II in 1945.
After Ruth married, she continued in nursing in Delhi and at the old Margaretville Hospital. She then worked as a postal clerk in Margaretville from 1950 until 1980.
Ruth was an avid reader, always searching for information. She was active in church choir and activities. She enjoyed music and enjoyed playing the piano and clarinet.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, past Matron, secretary; member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 216, past president; member of the Presbyterian Church; Boys and Girls Scouting; R.I.D. Ruth enjoyed flowers and bird watching.
She was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Hill, Margaretville; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Lydia Hill, Easley, S.C.; granddaughter and husband, Jenni and Rob Rich, Holly Springs, Miss., and one sister, Hazel Crosby, Halcott Center.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27 at the United Presbyterian Church, Margaretville, with Shirley Davis, C.L.P. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in loving memory of Virginia (Ruth) Hill may be made to Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Mountainside Residential Care Center or Catskill Area Hospice, Delhi.
