VanBenschoten elected Margaretville mayor by three votes

As predicted, it was a nail-biter of a mayoral election in the village of Margaretville on Wednesday, with deputy mayor John VanBenschoten emerging with a three-vote victory over his opponent, Central Catskills Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carol O'Beirne. VanBenschoten received 69 votes to O'Beirne's 66.

Incumbent trustee Iris Mead and candidate Wallace Patterson were elected to fill the two vacant seats on the village's Board of Trustees. Positions on the Board of Trustees are two-year appointments. VanBenschoten also received 18 write-in votes to retain his seat on the board, on which he has served for the past four years.

VanBenschoten will take office on April 1.
