Ulster Press closes its doors
By Jay Braman Jr.
The Ulster County Press, a weekly newspaper that served as the official paper for the Town of Shandaken, has stopped the presses for good. Publisher Lori Childers told reporters that the paper’s Feb. 11 edition would be the last issue after four years of circulation.
This marks the latest newspaper casualty in the Hudson Valley region, following the demise of the Journal Register Company-owned Taconic Press Group last week. The closing of the group’s eight papers, came a week after the closing of The Independent, a twice-weekly Columbia County newspaper also owned by the Journal Register Company, parent of the Kingston based Daily Freeman.
Childers said the closure affects five employees. She added that the weekly’s sister paper, the bimonthly Blue Stone Press, which serves the Rondout Valley area, will remain in operation.
