Turkey Trot boosts PH Center
By Jay Braman Jr.
Gobble gobble, walk, run or wobble, come to the third annual Phoenicia Turkey Trot this Saturday, Nov. 30 and help raise funds for the Pine Hill Community Center.
Turkey Trots are races held on or around Thanksgiving, presumably as a fun and festive method of burning off all those extra calories the holiday brings and burning any residual Tryptophan out of one’s system.
But in Phoenicia, the Turkey Trot has become much more than that. It has become a unique fundraiser in which every year a cause is chosen to be the recipient of whatever amount has been pledged.
In its first year, the event raised over $3,900 for the Phoenicia Library, which burned up that same year. Thanks in part to the Turkey Trot, library reconstruction is underway right now.
Organizer Heather Roberts said that this year the Pine Hill Community Center is trying to raise funds for a new roof on its facility on Main Street in Pine Hill.
“This event is the soul of what our Catskill communities are all about; a morning to get out, meet your friends, neighbors, visitors, experience one of the most interesting villages around, and do good while you’re at it,” she said. “We hope that all our friends and supporters will turn out and trot with us.”
The Pine Hill Community Center is dedicated to enriching the lives of the people in the Central Catskills Region by providing community-building activities that nurture creativity and life-long growth.
The center provides a vibrant, welcoming and comfortable space for all. Its goal is to help strengthen the economic vitality of the region, cultivate appreciation for its unique history and natural assets, and to provide excellence in programming in order to best meet the needs of the Catskills’ diverse communities.
The Phoenicia version of the Turkey Trot is a 2.4-mile run, ramble, trot, walk, or wobble. Registration and sign in are from 8 to 9:45 a.m. at the Parish Hall across from the St. Francis de Sales Church on Main St Phoenicia. Free Turkey Trot T-shirts will be given to the first 50 registered.
Also, there is a free Tot Trot for the little kids, ages five and under, at 9:30 a.m.
