Tour Woodchuck Lodge this weekend
Roxbury — The upcoming holiday weekend brings with it three opportunities to tour Woodchuck Lodge, the farmhouse where naturalist John Burroughs spent summers from 1910 to 1920.
Free tours will be provided by trained docents from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 4, 5 and 6. The lodge is located at 1633 Burroughs Memorial Road, Roxbury. Follow signs from NYS Route 30.
The famed naturalist was born at the family’s homestead just up the road from the 1862 farmhouse where he returned as an old man, and immediately built a rustic porch to better observe plants, animals and the weather, and where he entertained guests like Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
Peaceful Burroughs Memorial Field is a short walk away. The naturalist is buried there beside his treasured Boyhood Rock. The site features an outdoor exhibit on his life and work, and picnic facilities. For info, call 586-4973.
