"The Sound of Music" at MCS this weekend

The MCS Scitamard Society will present “The Sound of Music” on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, in the school auditorium featuring an all-student cast. The musical, with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and music by Richard Rogers, will be seen at 7 p.m. both evenings. Tickets for adults will be $6, students and senior citizens $4 with all children under eight years old being offered free admission.
The original production of the show opened on Broadway in 1959, playing for 1,442 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre starring Mary Martin in the role of Maria Rainer. The ever-popular film version was made in 1965 and was directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
Among the gifted young people who will be performing are MCS senior class members Kory Ancona as Maria, Robby Goodman as Captain von Trapp and Kailee Atkin as Elsa Schraeder. Holly MacDonald, Caitlyn Roberts and Jon Lee, also seniors, round out the class of ’09 list of participants in leading roles.
Junior actors in the show include Michelle O’Reilly as the Mother Abbess, Garrett Fairbairn as Rolf with Taylor McVitty and Anjelica Pugliesi appearing as Sister Sophia and Sister Berthe.
Class of 2011 participants and seasoned players include Katie Rosa, Travis Roberts and Matthew Gray.
Second time performers include freshman class members Sarah Hagakore, Genesis Quinones and Erin Filupeit. Newcomers to Scitamard in the show are sophomores Danielle Hull, Patrick O’Connell, Drew Sylvester, Olivia Todd and freshman Peter Cella.
Crew on the production includes Brian Faulkner, C.J. Wright, Julia Brophy, James Lor, Marcus Moore, Greg Lehn, Carson Goodman, Amy Filupeit and Kristi Gavette with Matthew Gray providing assistance on sound to adult mentor Anthony Ploutz.
Other adult mentors assisting on the show are director Marjorie Miller and musical director and piano accompanist Kent Brown.
Additionally Dick Tucker will be conducting a pit orchestra consisting of Robin White on flute, Rebecca Maeder-Chien and Alexa Finch on clarinet, Laura O’Brien on Oboe, MCS instrumental teacher Kathy Taylor on Bassoon, tenor sax player Jerry Schor along with wife Marianne on synthesized strings, Mike McAfee and Joyce Barber on trumpet, Connie McAfee on French Horn, Jefferson Piasek playing the tuba, Larry Tanzer on guitar and bass guitarist Carl Tucker.
