Per requests that can no longer be denied, the Andes Roundtable presents retired NYC Police Officer, Jack McShane who will give a presentation on policing the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the 1960s and ’70s. Gleaned from his personal experiences, it will include many anecdotes that can be seen as sad, ugly, amazing hilarious, but hopefully – mostly entertaining. Hunting Tavern, 7 p.m.
Thursday, May 8
Movie Night at the Andes Public Library at 7 p.m. This month the feature is a 2013 film starring Robert Redford, in which he portrays a man alone battling for survival at sea after his yacht collides with a shipping container in the Indian Ocean. There is no charge for admission, donations are always accepted so that we can continue to acquire newly released films for your enjoyment.

Penny Social and Mothers’ Day Pie Sale to benefit Historical Society of Middletown. Doors open at 1 p.m., drawings start 2:30 p.m. Housewares, toys, gifts, restaurant meals and many other goods and local services up for grabs! Door prizes, refreshments. “Correspondences” an exhibition by brother and sister artists, Peter and Carrie Yamaoka, opens with an artists’ reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Walt Mead Gallery at the Roxbury Arts Group. The show features ceramics by Peter and paintings by Carrie.
Zoom Gallery opens its doors for the summer season. Featured artist will be Martha Jean with a show of acrylic paintings and other local artists. The gallery is located at 1164 Main Street, Fleischmanns. Open Fri.-Sun. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission.

Bag Ali will present its Fabulous Spring Collection of Handbags and Accessories at Margaretville Hospital on Wednesday, May 14 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the hospital lobby. The Bag Ali Collection includes the hottest handbags styles made from buttery-soft leathers and fashion materials. Also being featured are chic metallics and prints, all in the latest colors and shapes. The Bag Ali Collection also includes elegant bags for evening, briefcases, scarves and small leather goods for women and men (including wallets). Joe Markulin, former professor of comparative literature with a specialization in Medieval and Renaissance studies, will speak at The Andes Public Library at 7 p.m. on his lively historical novel, Machiavelli: a Renaissance Life. All are cordially invited to attend this gathering of the Italian Circle, a non-membership group devoted to all things Italian.
