"Steel Magnolias" coming to Open Eye
Margaretville — “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling will have its first performance on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m. at The Open Eye Theater in Margaretville.
Directed by David J. Turan, this heart wrenching comedy/drama is set in a beauty shop in a small Louisiana town in the 1980s. The shop is owned and operated by the very hip Truvy (Jo Boring). She is assisted by seemingly shy and exceedingly religious Annelle (Lizz Browne).
The story centers on a bouquet of colorful dynamic clients, particularly Shelby, a young diabetic bride (Rachel Adams), her overbearing, yet caring mother M’Lynn (Elizabeth Sherr), and their friends Ouiser (Patricia Brannen) and Clairee (Anne Saxon-Hersh) who are each in their own way desperately trying to live a life of happiness. But life is not simple, and happiness does not come easily. Shelby becomes pregnant, much to the disapproval of her mother because the pregnancy could be fatal. Shelby is ecstatic. She would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.
As the drama plays through the seasons in Truvy’s beauty shop, the women grapple with love, secrecy, pain, and loss, and discover the power of hope and the strength of bonds between mother, daughter, and true friends.
We’re very pleased about this production of “Steel Magnolias,” says Open Eye producing artistic director Amie Brockway. “I think our audiences will love the combination of hilarious wit and intense drama.”
