Ski Plattekill slated to open this Saturday

Roxbury — Despite the many obvious variables facing the ski industry for the upcoming winter season, Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury is looking forward to a banner year. Weather permitting, owners of the area plan to open Dec. 6.
With added snowmaking (currently up to 75 percent), and a new winch cat groomer, skiers and snowboarders will experience vastly improved terrain at Plattekill this season. Several renovations have also been made to the lodge. Early snowfall and cold temperatures have combined to make good skiing for opening day. Plattekill will offer substantially reduced preseason prices through Dec. 21 and on Dec. 13-14, the resort will feature free lessons for anyone interested in learning to ski or snowboard.
Although a softer economy is predicted for 2009, Plattekill hopes that the 50 percent decline in gasoline prices from last year will allow skiers to easily make the drive to this region rather than make the longer trek to Vermont and New Hampshire. In an effort to make a visit to Plattekill even more attractive, this season Plattekill is offering free skiing and snowboarding tickets on nonholiday Sundays for each Saturday ticket purchased when customers spend the night at any participating Plattekill lodging partner. (For a complete list visit www.plattekill.com). This added overnight feature will make skiing more affordable and hopefully worth extending a weekend stay rather than returning home after a single day on the slopes. Plattekill also plans to continue its popular lodging program package featuring their ‘kids 17 and under ski free program’ in addition.
Another attractive and popular feature at Plattekill is their “Tubapalooza Snowtubing Park.” This winter the park will be open every Saturday evening and every day from Dec. 27 through Jan. 3 for the holiday week. Held under the lights, snow tubing allows young and old alike to enjoy the fun of gliding down a groomed slope to the delightful laughter and squeals of the riders. The resort food service and lounge are also open until closing time with live entertainment most evenings.
Check Plattekill’s website for upcoming events and special discounts throughout the season. Plattekill will keep skiers informed when they visit their website and join their “e-mail newsletter” or new this year, skiers can subscribe to a free text messaging service from their cell phone. Send a text to: 29222 and enter keywords like “SNOW” for daily snow reports, “POWDER” for powder reports when it snows, “DEALS” for discount days and “INFO” for special events and be kept up to date on all that’s happening at the mountain.
