September 24, 2008: German Club Oktoberfest will be held

To The Editor:
I am starting to get phone calls from people who are trying to figure out if the German American Club of the Northern Catskills is having its annual Oktoberfest this year. Some people have heard that the club is not having its Oktoberfest due to the rumored Belleayre budget cuts. Others have said that they have heard that it will be held behind the railroad station in Arkville. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Belleayre has assured us that our Oktoberfest will go on as planned. It is only the Belleayre-sponsored Fall Festival that is being moved to Arkville. Our club’s Oktoberfest will go on as usual at Belleayre. I think that some of the confusion comes from the fact that in one of your articles on the situation you referred to Belleayre’s Fall Festival as the October festival. Belleayre stopped using the phrase “Octoberfest” years ago.
The German American Club of the Northern Catskills’ annual Oktoberfest has become one of the premier events in the region, drawing thousands to Belleayre for a day of authentic German food, dancing, imported beer, craft items and prize drawings. Proceeds, which have numbered in the tens of thousands of dollars, have benefited numerous local charities and worthy individuals throughout the region for years.
So, as planned, please join us on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11 a. m. to 8 p.m. at the Discovery Lodge at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center for the German-American Club of the Northern Catskills’ Ninth Annual Oktoberfest. For more information call 586-2246 or visit
