Sen. Seward calls for DEC to OK Belleayre Resort

State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today called on New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joseph Martens to conclude his review of the proposed Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park and approve the long-awaited improvement project.
“As New York State touts the positive economic impact of tourism, it is past time to add a modernized and expanded Belleayre Resort to our roster of winning attractions,” said Senator Seward.  “The proposed resort expansion is a tremendous opportunity for the Catskills and our state and support has been voiced by local elected officials, business owners, and residents – I offered my formal support more than a year ago.  Now it is up to the DEC to add its approval and advance this project.”
In a letter to DEC Commissioner Martens, Senator Seward writes: “The time has come to render a decision and to allow the project to move forward.  Its benefits to the area have been identified and extolled by many in correspondence, testimony and news reports.  The local communities support it.  State and local elected officials support it.”

Widespread benefits
“The scope and significance of this project warranted a thorough review. That has occurred and it is time to move to the next stage.  With the short construction season here in New York, any further delay could be extremely costly, and put on hold the benefits this project will undoubtedly produce.
“Overall, the proposed Belleayre Resort will help solidify the local tax base and grow the regional economy by making the most of our ever-present natural beauty and burgeoning tourism industry.  Year-round recreation opportunities and economic growth awaits, though I hope for not much longer,” Seward concluded.
