Second Catskills Cup Tennis Tournament action this weekend in Fleischmanns

Fleischmanns — The second annual Catskills Cup tennis tournament will be played in Fleischmanns’ Wagner Avenue Park from July 30 to August 1, with an evening of barbecue and free live music on Friday July 30 and a hall of fame dinner on Saturday, July 31 featuring the music of zydeco jam of L’il Anne and Hot Cayenne.
Friday features an all-day free tournament for junior players 18 years and younger. The runnerup and winner of that tournament will receive free entry into the adult tournament. At 4 p.m. on Friday, Fleischmanns’ park will be transformed into a community festival with barbecue and other food vendors, refreshments including beer and Sangria, and a free outdoor concert as the hometown Catskill Mountain Boys open for the popular local indie folk-soul-rock band, Esquela, as they jam into the evening. Led by front man John “Chico” Finn, Esquela brings to its local rural roots a honky-tonk edge and sense of humor imbued with a strong dose of history and place.
Saturday’s all-day tennis action will feature two men’s divisions, one for players 55 and over, and a men’s open division, a women’s open, and a division for mixed doubles and open doubles. Entry into the tournament is $50, and for $100 players also receive a ticket to Saturday’s gala dinner and concert.
Saturday evening, the gala hall of fame dinner at 6:30 includes fine dining under the big tent with an auction and the rocking zydeco beat of L’il Anne and Hot Cayenne. A spicy blend of rock ‘n’ roll, blues and funk meets the up-tempo Zydeco beat in this Northeast Zydeco roots band, a sound so authentic that L’il Anne and Hot Cayenne have been invited to play in venues usually off-limits to all but Louisiana zydeco artists.
The dinner dance is open to players and spectators alike, and for non-players, a $75 dinner price includes beer and wine with your meal and the evening’s entertainment. The action wraps up on Sunday with tournament semi-finals and finals and an award ceremony to salute the winning players.
The tournament play is open to non-professionals only, but spectators are guaranteed a show of stellar, competitive tennis from dedicated players. Tournament entry fee is $50, or $100 to include a hall of fame dinner ticket. Non-players may attend the gala dinner and concert for $75. Sign up or reserve dinner seats by calling Mark Birman at 254-5341.
Sponsors of this year’s Catskill Cup include Freshtown of Margaretville, Hanah Mountain Resort, Catskill Mountain News, Fleischmanns First, Wilber Bank, MTC, the MARK Project, Tennis Everyone, and WIOX 91.3 FM. Proceeds of the tournament will benefit the Fleischmanns park and community programs.
