Ruth Ellen Haight, 94, a resident of Grand Gorge died at her home with family members by her side on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014.
Ruth was born at the family home on Ferris Hill, Grand Gorge on June 25, 1919, the daughter of Manley and Gertrude (Brooks) Murray. She married Edwin Haight on September 20, 1942 in Grand Gorge. He died on March 9, 1995.
Ruth graduated from Grand Gorge Central School in 1936. She was employed at NBT Bank in Grand Gorge for 23 years starting in the proof and bookkeeping departments and then as a full- and part-time teller. She retired in 1991. In prior years Ruth worked at the Victory Store as a clerk, as a bookkeeper for Sheffield Creamery, and she also worked at the Economy Store in Stamford.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Grand Gorge where she served as treasurer and on many committees including working at the thrift shop. She was a member of the Earl B. Dudley American Legion Auxiliary and served at one time as treasurer. Ruth was a trustee for the Fairview Cemetery Association.
Ruth is survived by two sons and their wives, Manley and Patti Haight and Gary and Carol Haight; two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Carson Stryker and Cheri and Lee Franc; 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. A sister, Edna Rappleyea, also survives.
Calling hours were held on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury from 6 until 8 p.m.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Grand Gorge. The Rev Dottie Morris, officiated.
A committal service followed at the Fairview Cemetery in Grand Gorge.
