Roxbury students earn Science Olympiad prizes

 

The Roxbury Central School Junior High Science Olympiad Team finished 27th out of 39 teams in state final competition on April 11 and 12 at SUNY New Paltz.

The team of Brandi Carufe and Mickey McAfee brought home a gold medal in the category of mystery architecture. 

Other teams that placed in the competition included Heather Reinshagen and Katie Fairbairn, 5th in car of tomorrow; Meghan and Abby Wallace, 8th in science crime busters; Tarah DiBenedetto and Meghan Wallace,  8th in science world; Garrett Hall and Jennifer Wallace, 11th in scrambler; Mickey McAfee and Heather Reinshagen, 12th in balloon launch glider; Angela Perazone and Meghan Wallace, 12th in write it/ do it; Mickey McAfee and Tarah DiBenedetto, 14th in rocks and minerals and Heather Reinshagen and Elaine Faison, 15th in tower building.

Ten of the 14 team members had an event finish in the top half of the 39 teams present and the team improved its standing from last year. 

The team is coached by Fred Zimmerman, Fred Zerega, Jamie Kellerhouse, Cathy Rappleyea, Al Vigna and Joan Riordan.
