Catherine Fleming of Wells Bridge, a former teacher for several years at Roxbury Central School, celebrated her 94th birthday at her home Thursday, Aug. 21. She received six telephone calls and 23 cards. Miss Fleming is in good health and still remembers her individual students when teaching at Roxbury.
It’s a “Railride into Yesteryear” for those who come into Roxbury by train for Roxbury’s annual “Turn of the Century Days on Labor Day weekend. This is a step back in time for all who attend, with carriage rides, vintage “base ball,” all the “agreeable pursuits” of 1898 and victuals appropriate to the era.
New this year is a panoramic community portrait of everyone in period dress on Saturday afternoon August 30. So don your Gay Nineties glad rags and smile for the camera (which is not likely to be a vintage one!). If you need to borrow an outfit for the occasion, call 607 326-3722 (Parks Department) to arrange for a fitting of garments from the town “closet.” On Saturday, Aug. 30 Historic house tours will be offered between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Whet Paint is slated for Saturday, Aug. 30 at The Roxbury Arts Group. Local artists armed with easel and palette will each head out to create an original painting. At 5 p.m. the doors to the Walt Meade Gallery, Vega Mountain Road will open to the public. Freshly painted works will be on display and go to the highest bidder in a silent auction. Admission to the reception is $10. Great food and wine will be available at the reception. Some of the paintings will be on display on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information call RAG at 607 326-7908.
