Richard W. Paradies, 84, of Claryville, formerly of Margaretville, died at his residence on Saturday June 30, 2012 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Richard (Pop) was born on December 13, 1927 on Staten Island. He was the son of the late Richard and Hanna (Westbrook) Paradies.
Richard delivered milk during his high school years and was also a baseball catcher. Richard worked on an oil tanker for one and-a-half years and then he worked on his father’s farm in Vermont until he got drafted by the Army in October of 1950 where he was an engineer and Staff Sergeant. He received his honorable discharge in 1956. While still in the Army Reserve he started his 30-year career at General Motors in Linden, New Jersey. He retired in 1983. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and camping and was an avid Met fan. Pop wanted to say thank you to his dear friend Lois.
Richard is survived by Marie, his loving wife of 60 years, who he married on August 17, 1951. Also surviving are his children, Linda Manon of Margaretville, Richard Paradies of Kingston, David Paradies and his wife Rose of Claryville, and Elizabeth McColgan and husband John of Staten Island. Ten grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild also survive.
He was predeceased by his brother Robert and a stepsister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday July 5, 2012 at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Calling hours will be held from noon until service time at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Burial will be in the Margaretville cemetery annex with military honors.
