Richard “Dick” Merwin, 72, of Station Road, Shandaken died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at Mountainside Care in Margaretville. He was a native and life-long area resident.
He was born in Chichester on April 8, 1936, son of the late Richard and Vera (Eckert) Merwin. He was active in construction work most all of his life, both self-employed, and with the Teamsters Local #445. He was a past chief of the M. F. Whitney Hose Co. in Phoenicia, and past Superintendent of Highways for the Town of Shandaken.
His love of the outdoors allowed him to enjoy hunting and fishing, both for stream trout as well as salmon fishing trips to Polaski. He had a reputation for integrity, and was dedicated to his community. He often extended himself to help out area churches, the American Legion, and the town.
Surviving are his children, Vinny and his wife Joan Merwin of Fleischmanns, Laurie and her husband Bill Buckholz of Oliverea, and Donna and her husband Dean Carr of West Hurley; sisters, Millie Wilkens and Margie Peck both of Shandaken, Linda Rinaldo and Joan Buono, both of Saugerties, and Susie Kinahan of FL; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Dick Merwin will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.
Friends will be received on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home.
Spring interment will be in the Shandaken Cemetery.
