Hayden was born on November 14, 1938 in Ferguson, NC, the son of Sam and Gladys Walsh. His father died when Hayden was two years old. On Sundays, his Aunt Lou brought him to the Advent Christian Church in Beaver Creek. As a young man Hayden felt the call of God to full-time Christian ministry.

For 40 years Hayden served as pastor in Advent Christian churches in several states. For 20 of those years he served as pastor of the Margaretville Advent Christian Church. He was devoted to helping people know Jesus Christ as savior.
Hayden paid close attention to details. And this characteristic shown prominently in his consistent, loving devotion to his family, pastoral ministry, and community service. Hayden loved the Lord, and he loved studying and applying the Bible to life.
On September 27, 1969, Hayden married his college classmate, Esther Hillriegel, in the Margaretville Advent Christian Church. Three sons were born to Hayden and Esther: Samuel II, Jeffrey and Jonathan. Hayden made a special point of supporting their academic and athletic success. Hayden enjoyed traveling with Esther, fishing, baseball, and golf with his sons and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; three sons, Samuel (Janelle) Walsh II, of Clovis, NM, Jeffrey (Rhonda) Walsh of Stanfield, NC, Jonathan (Emily) Walsh of Mt. Vernon, IA; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Megan, Isaac, Curtis, Ethan, Franklin and Joshua; one sister, Delphine Walsh of Ferguson, NC; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
