Quilt talk and film featured at Fleischmanns holiday event
Fleischmanns — “Threads: Quilters Talk About Their Craft,” a roundtable discussion by four accomplished Catskills quilters, will be held Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m. at the Fleischmanns Community Church, Main Street, Fleischmanns.
Peg Barnes of Arkville, Virginia Hull of Middleburgh, Lesley Gray of Andes and Arlene Vrooman of Schoharie will talk about the art and inspiration of designing and stitching quilts. All four quilters are members of the Catskill Mountain Quilters Hall of Fame.
A short documentary film made by Melissa Cooperman about the Sun Bonnet Quilters of Vega will be shown throughout the day. Visitors will enjoy a colorful exhibition of more than 30 contemporary and vintage quilts and wall hangings, some of them for sale. Proceeds from a raffle of a hand-sewn quilt made by Kathy Grocholl, and of a pie and bake sale, will benefit the restoration of the Community Church.
There is no admission to the show or roundtable discussion, however donations towards the church restoration are most welcome. Copies of Unbroken Thread, A History of Quiltmaking in the Catskills by Steve Hoare, with profiles of three of the featured quilters, will be available for sale, proceeds benefitting the Historical Society of the Town of Middletown, co-sponsors of the event.
The exhibit and program are part of Memorial Day Weekend festivities in the village.
Coordinators of the quilt show and discussion are Peg DiBenedetto and Jackie Purdy. Lucci Kelly will act as moderator for the quilting discussion.
