Property owners gain school tax extension
By Brian Sweeney
Area taxpayers will receive a 21-day extension for paying school tax bills, during which no interest or penalties will accrue.
Officials in the Andes, Onteora and Roxbury school districts have all voted to approve the tax payment extension that was issued by the governor as a result ofthe historic August 28 flooding. The new deadline for tax payments without deadlines for property owners in these districts is October 21.
The Margaretville Central School District had previously issued an extension on the deadline date for taxes due to difficulties in sending out tax statements based on county response to billing matters, according to Superintendent Tony Albanese. As a result, the MCS Board of Education has approved an October 31 deadline for tax payment without incurring penalties.
In the case of taxpayers paying late beyond the extension dates, the law permits districts to assess interest and penalties as if the extension had not been granted; i.e., beginning with the original September 30 deadline for payment without penalties.
