Phoenicia has a new art gallery

By Jay Braman Jr.
This weekend a new fine art gallery joins the fabric of similar venues that blanket the Phoenicia area. Phoenicia Resident Andrea Cabane, an artist and photographer, said this week that she has always wanted to have her own gallery, and when she saw space available on Main Street she knew it would be the perfect location to fulfill that dream.
Cabane Studios is in what is now known as the Ruth Gale Building, also known locally as the “double building,” because it is actually two identical structures built side by side.
The building on the left, which houses the offices of Ruth Gale Realty, was built in 1904 and was the Longyear Bakery. In 1911 the second structure was squeezed in between the bakery and the Stony Clove Creek. The second building was a dry goods store called Gordon and Bluestone, whose slogan was “The Home of Great Values.”
On Monday Cabane was preparing the space for this weekend.
“We are gearing up for our first opening reception here at Cabane Studios,” she said. “Our opening reception will be Friday, Nov. 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. This show will hang through the beginning of January, and the pick up/drop off date will be Saturday and Sunday January 3 and 4. Our next opening date will be determined in the next few weeks.”
Cabane notes that submissions are closed for the current show but she is taking submissions for January’s show and beyond.
The Gallery Space is also available for solo shows, she said, and suggests that anyone interested should call 688-5490 for rate information. There is also additional information on Andrea, the gallery, and the show on the web at
“Come join us for a fun night of viewing eclectic, traditional and contemporary art from up and coming artists from around the region. Refreshments will be served,” she said. “Hope to see everyone there.”
Gallery hours are Fridays 3 to 6 p.m., Saturdays noon to 6 p.m. and by appointment.
