Orvil A. Rosa, 90, of Southside Road, Margaretville, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville. He was born in Dry Brook on August 9, 1917, the son of Albert Rosa and Della Vermilyea Rosa. He attended Margaretville Central School.
He married Catherine Bellows in February 1941 at Margaretville.
Orvil was a dairy farmer from 1941-1957 and was in the contracting business from 1957-1988. He also served on the Margaretville Central School Board. He was active in local politics, serving on the village board from April 1959 to July 1985.
He was the Mayor of Margaretville from March 1968 to April 1977 and again from November 1980 until April 1985. He also served on the village planning board. Orvil was active in the Rotary Club, Masons, Dairyman’s League and the Republican Party. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Orvil was a member of the Margaretville Methodist Church and an honorary member of the Margaretville Fire Department.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Robert Smith, Joyce and Bursie Knapp, Sally and Micky Olsen; two sons, Jack Rosa and Ray and daughter-in-law Melody Rosa; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, Also surviving are four brothers, Lester Rosa, Ivan Rosa, Gordon Rosa and Robert Rosa and two sisters, Marguerite Fairbairn and Edna Mae Conine.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Rosa; his parents, Albert and Della Rosa and a sister, Thelma Scott.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Catskill Mountain Christian Center, Margaretville with Rev. Carolee Coye and Pastor Robert Englehardt, officiating.
Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery.
Donations in Orvil’s memory may be made to the Margaretville Fire Department or the Catskill Area Hospice.
