News wins awards at NYPA
Arkville — The Catskill Mountain News has been awarded two prizes at the NYS Press Association’s 2001 Better Newspaper contest.
News Publisher Dick Sanford earned a first-place prize in the Best Sports Action Photo category. This year was the eighth that Mr. Sanford has received awards for his photograpy.
His winning submission from an April 2011 issue depicted a play at second base in a baseball game between Margaretville and South Kortright.
Commenting on Mr. Sanford’s winning entry, one of the judges wrote, “Great action. Puts you at the ball park. Nice work!”
Reporter/columnist Brian Sweeney received a third-place prize in the Best column category. This marks the seventh time that Mr. Sweeney’s weekly column, “Here’s the Scoop,” has won a prize in the NYPA Better Newspaper contest. He has previously been honored twice each with first-place, second-place and third-place awards.
The awards for column writing are based on sampling of submissions. In recognizing “Here’s the Scoop,” a judge wrote, “Sweeney gives readers a good feel for life in his small town and the connections between people, both the positive and negative aspects.”
The prizes in the NYPA’s 2011 Better Newspaper contest were awarded at the organization’s annual Press convention held March 30-April 1 at the Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs. This year’s contest included 158 newspapers submitting 2,437 entries. Newspapers competed for prizes in 60 categories.
