Michael E. Hoeko, 91, of Fleischmanns, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital. Margaretville. He was born September 29, 1917 in New York City to Nickolas and Katherine Hoeko. He married Ann Owens on June 4, 1950, in Phoenicia.
Mike served in the United States Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sgt. He was a flight engineer and military trainer. He was employed by IBEW Union No. 363 as a master electrician for 20 years, working all over the United States at nuclear and cement plants and on many other projects.
Mike spent many years in the Red Kill Valley of Fleischmanns.
He had just received his 50-year service notice from the Middletown American Legion Post 216. Mike was also a member of the NRA.
He enjoyed gardening, growing fruit trees and lovingly tended his apple orchard and shared his knowledge of growing apple trees with anyone who came along. He liked working on mechanical projects and gunsmithing. He was never an idle man and at age 90 he repaired his own roof.
His sense of humor was enjoyed by those who knew him well, and he was known to always help his neighbors with any of his many talents. He was always there for them.
Surviving is a nephew, John Hoeko, of Fleischmanns and two nieces, Jeanne Lavel of Walton and Marti Rosenburgh of New York City.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Hoeko, Jan. 16, 1994; two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Robert Lawsine officiating.
Burial in Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns, will take place at a later date.
