Michael Hasay, 98, of Fleischmanns, died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 after a brief illness.
Mr. Hasay was born on July 3, 1914 in Ihorvytsya, Ukraine, the son of Maria Kinjerski and Stephan Hasaj.
He was a carpenter/cabinet maker in Ternopil, Ukraine and continued his trade when he was a refugee
in Germany in 1945. Mr. Hasay was a member of the carpenters union in Kingston.
He married Elisabeth Kleebauer on August 6, 1949 in Ulm, Germany, leaving for New York City shortly afterwards. Michael and his wife settled in Fleischmanns in 1955 and together ran the Elisabeth House & Motel on Depot Street until her death in 2007. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing, reading, and working with his hands.
Surviving are his son George Hasay and his wife Brenda of Fleischmanns; a brother, Orest Hasaj of the Ukraine and several nieces and nephews who live in the Ukraine and Poland.
Calling hours were held on Friday, Nov. 16 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at the Hynes Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Dykstra officiated. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
