MCS names Conroy and Warner top graduates
The Margaretville Central School District has named Michael Joseph Conroy as the valedictorian for the Class of 2014 and James Warner as its salutatorian.
Valedictorian Michael Joseph Conroy will graduate from Margaretville Central School with an Advanced Regents degree with Honors mastery in math and science, and from ONC BOCES having completed the New Visions Health Care Professions Program.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and an actor in the school theater club, Scitamard. Michael is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, an assistant Catechism instructor at the Catholic Church, and a student director at the regional leadership conferences hosted by Catskill Area Student Study Council.
This past year, Michael attended the New Visions Health Care Professions Program where he shadowed many professionals at A.O. Fox Hospital.
Michael commented that one of his fondest high school memories was singing “There’s No Business Like Show Business” during Scitimard’s production of Annie Get Your Gun.
Michael will attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges next year as a biochemistry major with a pre-med intent. He hopes to practice emergency medicine or pediatrics in upstate New York one day.
While at Margaretville Central School, Michael participated in the varsity soccer, tennis and ski teams. He was a member of the MCS Section IV, Class D soccer championship team last fall.
Michael expressed his thankfulness to all those who have supported him through the years and to give a special thanks to his many dedicated teachers.
Michael is the son of Christopher and Elaine Conroy of Margaretville.
Class of 2014 Salutatorian James Warner has been very active academically and athletically throughout his high school career. He is the current president of National Honor Society. Last year, he was presented with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. He attended the RYLA conference held in Oneonta where he was chosen Most Outstanding RYLAn.
James was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout earlier this year and has been an active member of Boy Scouts since first grade. James has also participated in Scitamard since ninth grade, most recently appearing as the Cat in the Hat in “Seussical.” He was also a recipient of the Beck Scholar Athlete Award and served as a student director at the Catskill Area Youth Study Council.
James participated in four varsity sports playing on 18 different varsity teams during his years at MCS. He was co-captain of this year’s Class D Section 4 champion soccer team and the 2013 Delaware League Men’s Singles Tennis Champion.
Among his other athletic accomplishments were: three-time Delaware League soccer all-star and captain during his senior year. He was named to the Scholar-Athlete Team in 2012 and 2013.
James was a six-year member of the varsity golf team. He earned Delaware League All-Star Honorable Mention and was a member of the Scholar-Athlete Team in 2013.
He played varsity basketball for two years and was a member of the 2012-13 Crossover Delaware League Champion, the school’s first such title in 18 years. He was named to the Basketball Scholar-Athlete Team in 2012-13.
James was a six-year member of the varsity tennis team and was the 2013 Delaware League Tennis Singles Champion. He was a six-time Delaware League Tennis All-Star (Second Team twice and First Team four times) and was named to the Scholar-Athlete Team in 2013 and 2014.
James will be attending New England College in Henniker, NH will he plans to major in Outdoor Education.
James is the son of Jeff and Doris Warner of Margaretville.
MCS graduation will take place on Saturday, June 28 at 1:30 p.m. Weather-permitting, an outdoor ceremony will take place in front of the school (alternative location will be the Margaretville Central School gymnasium).
