MCS to host indoor tourney


Margaretville — The MCS Booster Club will host its 10th annual indoor soccer tournament at Margaretville Central School on Friday evening March 8 and all day Saturday, March 9. The tournament will include 44 teams divided into four age groups. The 6th- to 8th-grade bracket will be Friday evening starting at 5 p.m.

On Saturday the action will begin with the high-school boys starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by the high school girls at 12:40 p.m. The tournament will end with the “Old Timers” bracket starting at 5 p.m. Teams will arrive from Delhi, Ellenville, Gilboa, Downsville, Schenevus, Rhinebeck, Roxbury and Walton to compete during the tournament.

Tournament sponsors include many local area business, led by corporate sponsor MTC, Coldwell Banker Timberland Properties, The Flour Patch, Fruitful Furnishings, Miller’s Drug Store, Mathiesen Builders, Tanzer Accounting, Summerfield’s, Sanford, P.E. Professional Engineering Services, Z Painting, Diamond Deb Nail Salon, Four Js Home Services, Inc. Bruno’s Bottled Gas and The Cheese Barrel.

Indoor soccer is similar to outdoor, but there are differences. Indoor is played with a heavy ball called a futsal ball. The game is played in a gym using the lines of a basketball court for boundaries. Games are 15-minutes long, with four- or five-member teams. The game is played at quicker pace, with more passing and scoring giving an exciting game.

The Academy Street entrance to MCS will open at 4:30 p.m. on Friday evening and 8 a.m. on Saturday with the first games at 8:30 a.m. There is no charge for admission. The booster club will be selling an assortment of refreshments throughout the day.
