MCS girls down the rockets
By John Bernhardt
Senior Raeann Bond had a hand in a dozen Blue Devil second-half points to help Margaretville come from behind to topple Roxbury, 35-28, in a game played in Roxbury on Friday.
Bond helped her team erase a four-point deficit, scoring all six of her points in the third quarter, then dished out assists that resulted in six more Blue Devil points as Margaretville pulled away down the homestretch.
Baskets were hard to come by in the early going. Margaretville struggled to generate any offense in the first half, scoring only nine points, six on rebounding put backs and three from the foul line. Even so, the Blue Devils went to the lockers at intermission only trailing by four, 13-9.
Kennedy Faraci’s seven points paced an offensively challenged Rocket team playing without their center Kendal Spraque, who was sidelined due to sickness.
Bond used a Tess Svoboda pass to hit a shot from the left elbow of the foul line at the start of the second half. The Blue Devils’ senior was fouled putting back an offensive rebound and hit both charity shots and the game was tied 13-13.
Faraci took a defensive rebound coast-to-coast for a layup to put Roxbury back in front. A Sami Hunt banker from the middle of the lane after an offensive rebound knotted the score again, before Bond finished a Margaretville fast break, converting a long Svoboda pass for a score.
Evening the score
Two Faraci foul shots evened things up again at 17-17. Hunt swished a soft shot from the lane on a Margaretville out-of-bounds play and Svoboda hit one of two foul shots with 1.2 seconds left on the third period clock, nudging the Blue Devils ahead, 20-17.
Tension mounted as the teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the final frame. Two Allyce McIntosh foul shots left a single point separating the rivals. Svoboda used a long outlet pass to find Annette Hogan at half court, and Hogan broke behind the Rockets’ defense for a score. Faraci answered for Roxbury, driving from the left wing and hitting a runner in the middle of the lane. Margaretville led, 24-21.
A Faraci drive down the left side of the lane ended in a Roxbury layup, but Bond found Hogan alone at the top of the key, and the Margaretville guard buried a three-point shot pushing the Blue Devils’ margin to 27-23.
A long Hunt outlet pass sent Hogan flying down the court for a score, starting a surge that saw Margaretville score eight of the game’s final 11 points. A three-point Faraci bomb pulled the Rockets within three, 29-26, but the Rockets failed to score again until Samantha Sprague put back a missed shot just before the final horn.
Leading the way
Faraci scored a game-high 18 points for the Rockets. Margaretville capitalized on balanced scoring with Sami Hunt scoring 10 points, Annette Hogan nine, Tess Svoboda eight and Raeann Bond six.
