MCS Devils beat RCS Rockets in baseball
Monday’s warm spring weather seemed to heat up the Margaretville bats as the Blue Devils rapped out 12 hits to down Roxbury, 13-7, in non-league play. The first five batters in the Blue Devils’ batting order had a pair of hits with Matt VanValkenburg and Cooper Reither both scoring three times.
Reither got things going in Margaretville’s first at bat, lining a triple into the gap in left-center field that scored Eric Mathiesen, who had reached on an error. Danny Conroy followed with a single up the middle to score Reither.
VanValkenburg, Kyle Short, and Reither grouped three hits at the top of the Margaretville batting order and added a Colby Russo RBI single to score three more times in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Blue Devils’ senior pitching ace, Kyle Short dominated on the hill throwing four no-hit innings to earn his third win against no losses on the year. Roxbury scored an unearned run against Short in his last inning of work. Short struck out seven, walked one, with one hit batter.
Building the lead
The Blue Devils added five runs in the top of the fifth, the big hit a two RBI double by Short. Conroy and VanValkenburg both had RBI singles in the inning.
Roxbury greeted Blue Devils’ relief pitcher Matt VanValkenburg with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. After VanValkenburg retired his first two batters, Chris Shultis and Beau O’Donnell laced singles. An infield error extended the inning, plating a Roxbury run and setting the table for Will Rendler’s two-run single.
Devin Amundsen’s RBI stretched the Margaretville lead to 12-4 in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back Sam Nash and Darian Scudder singles staged a Rockets’ rally in the bottom half of the inning. James Liles single drove home both runners to shave the Blue Devils’ lead to 12-6.
Both teams scored single runs in the final frame with Van Valkenburg scoring his third run of the contest in the top of the frame, and Scudder’s single knocking home Roxbury’s final run in the bottom of the inning.
The win boosts Margaretville record to 3-0. The Blue Devils host South Kortright on Friday.
