Mayoral posts up for election in Margaretville, Fleischmanns

The position of mayor will be on the ballot in the villages of Margaretville and Fleischmanns in the March 18 election. Current Margaretville Mayor Bill Stanton announced last month that he would not be seeking a fourth term.
Trustee Iris Mead will also be up for re-election in the March 18 election; John VanBenschoten, whose trustee seat was also up for renewal, has publicly expressed interest in succeeding Stanton as mayor. Margaretville resident Carol O’Beirne is the only other candidate to announce her candidacy for the position thus far.
Village residents wishing to run in the election must file a nominating petition, which can be obtained from the village office and must be filed with the village clerk between Feb. 3 and 10. The only requirements to be a trustee are that the candidate be a United States citizen, be at least 18 years of age, and be a resident of the village.
The position of Mayor of Fleischmanns is also up for contention in a March 18 election. The only candidate who has officially submitted a petition thus far is Fleischmanns resident David Morell. The winner of the Fleischmanns election would succeed acting mayor Malcolm Becker, who stepped in following the departure of former mayor Kathy Wilbur.
Petitions for those wishing to appear on the Fleischmanns ballot are due in the village clerk’s office by Friday, Feb. 13.
