Margaretville nine wins opener

By John Bernhardt
Cold, damp weather caused Margaretville baseball coach Rick Funck to put a 40-pitch limit on members of his pitching staff during the Blue Devils’ opener in Roxbury last Thursday.
Four Margaretville pitchers shared the hill as the Blue Devils opened their season with a 14-4 victory over the Rockets.
Brandon Lane started the contest and went two innings for Margaretville. Lane was spelled by Patrick O’Connell who tossed three frames. Guy Nobile and Brian Faulkner both hurled an inning to finish the affair.
Margaretville took advantage of several bases-on-balls and passed balls by the home team’s catcher to generate their 14-run assault. The Blue Devils recorded only a handful of hits in the game. Faulkner got the first hit of the season for the visitors in the second inning. Nobile lined a hard shot up the middle bouncing off the second base bag later in the frame, and O’Connell got his first hit of the season later in the game. Eighth-grader John Fairbairn placed a clean flair into right field for the first hit of his varsity career in the late innings.
Funck was pleased with the defensive play of his infield. Roxbury’s batters hit seven balls and all played cleanly by Blue Devils’ infielders. Freshman Cody Fronckowiak and Lane made several sharp plays at shortstop with O’Connell handling the action at third and Chris Costa doing the work around second. Jacob Johnston and Nathan Tuck both came off the bag at first base to haul in throws and make putouts on balls that threatened to sail away.
Roxbury third baseman Adam Arvanete was the hitting star of the game by tagging a pair of doubles.
