Margaretville man wins car in Monticello drawing

If you’re going to experience a random stroke of good luck, conventional wisdom would say that a racino – a combined race track and casino – is a pretty good place to do it. Margaretville resident Gary Hull would undoubtedly agree with that sentiment. Hull went to Monticello Gaming and Raceway in Sullivan County on Saturday and won a drawing for a brand new Toyota vehicle.
“It’s the first thing I’ve ever won big in my life,” Hull said. “After 57 years, it’s the first thing I’ve ever won.”
The drawing was part of a summer-long promotion called the Sizzlin’ Summer Spectacular II, which will reward one winner each week with a Toyota car or truck. On August 30, the nine winners will learn which vehicle they won: a Corolla, a Camry, a Solara convertible, a Tacoma, a RAV4 or a Highlander. Winners can also opt to take a cash prize instead.
“It was nothing more than pure luck,” Hull said. “When I go, I’m never there that late. I never go on a Saturday night. But I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
Players have players’ cards that they put into the machines, and any time they play a game, points are earned.
“After you earn so many points, you get entered into these drawings,” Hull said. “I didn’t even know I was in the drawing until they called my name. I was like the 11th person they called – you have to be present to win. I heard my name and I was like, ‘Aah! That’s me!”
When Hull goes back on August 30 to claim his prize, he will once again participate in a drawing: this time, he’ll randomly select an envelope with a photo of his new car and the keys. He can either take his prize home or the money.
“I’m not sure which way I’m going to go,” he said. “I kind of like the pickup truck, but I’d say I’ll probably opt out for the cash. I don’t really need the car; I could use the money more.”
He had one concession.
“Unless my wife wants a new car,” he said. “But I’d take the cash and take her on vacation.”
