March 26, 2008: Time of Need

in

To The Editor:

I was deeply distressed to read that Delaware County leaders were more concerned with a few dollars than they were with supporting Brookside Hardware in its time of need. Hopefully, after a weekend of reflection, they have reconsidered this most unfortunate decision.
The owners of Brookside Hardware have been a positive force in our community for over 20 years. They are known throughout the county as honest, hardworking business people. During the horrible state police standoff last year, they opened their store to assist our brave troopers. They have been a major employer and taxpayer in the county. Many do not know that they continued to provide health care insurance to employees that were unable to continue working due to illness.
Will and Steve Finch have been volunteer firemen in this community for most of their adult life. They are the ones that are out at 3 a.m. where a crisis occurs. They have always responded to the community by asking, “How can I help?” They have never asked for anything in return.
It is now time for the Delaware County leadership to come to their aid. It will be a “win-win” because we need a rebuilt Brookside as soon as possible. If they do not, then we need new leadership.
