Maple bake-off set for March 22 in Fleischmanns
As the days get longer and daytime temperature rises above 32 degrees, the age-old tradition of tapping maple trees is about to begin. Whether done with the old fashion metal taps and a metal bucket or the new plastic taps that hook into plastic tubing, the sap will be running and the new maple syrup, once known as liquid gold, will be ready soon.
Everyone loves maple syrup on his or her waffles, pancakes and French toast. On the weekend of March 21, 22 and 23, Fleischmanns First, along with the NY State Maple Syrup Producers, will be celebrating the new season’s maple syrup production with weekend long activities and events.
The Maple Bake Off Café will pop up again for the third year at 1053 Main Street, Fleischmanns on Saturday, March 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. Bakers are encouraged to select a category; traditional, gluten free, or intergeneration in which to enter their baked goods made with maple syrup or maple sugar as an ingredient. The judges, including Devin Mills of Peekamoose, Michael Cioffi of the Phoenicia Diner, Sharon Reich of Green Door Magazine, and Peg DiBenedetto of Vly Mountain Spring Water, will select a Blue Ribbon winner in each category. Last year’s winner was Susan McClellan with a maple pecan pie a la mode topped with homemade ice cream.
Baking contest guidelines and applications are available at www.fleischamnnsny.com and www.markproject.org.
