Longyear opens group show featuring 26 artists

Margaretville — Opening this week at Margaretville’s Longyear Gallery is “Twenty-Six Artists,” a group show featuring the work of all Longyear Gallery members. The artists’ reception will take place Saturday, June 7 from 3 to 6 p.m.
The works on display will include new work by Longyear Gallery’s 26 members, including Robert Axelrod, Ann Lee Fuller, Elaine Grandy, Robin Halpern, John Hopkins, David Leveson, Meg Leveson, Helane Levine-Keating, Linda Lariar, Patrice Lorenz, Frank Manzo, Laini Manzo, Janice de Marino, Amy Masters, Elaine Mayes, Chris Moore, Tom Rapin, Edmond Rinnooy-Kan, Marilyn Silver, Nat Thomas, Alix Hall Travis, Gerda Van Leeuwen, Corneel Verlaan, Ros Welchman, Susan Whittenburg, and Ellen Wong. Each artist works in different media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, ceramics, collage, and photography.
Longyear Gallery, founded in 2007, is a cooperative gallery, which means that all 26 members have been juried in by the rest of the gallery. Because there is no gallerist, members themselves support and promote each other’s art, participate in running the gallery by paying dues for the rent, hang the shows, provide food for art openings, and take turns being present as the contact person on Fridays-Mondays when the gallery is open.

Lots of excitement
Current Gallery Managers Gerda van Leeuwen and Nat Thomas, along with a Steering Committee made up of seven members, deal with the daily and monthly gallery concerns. Longyear’s group shows are ongoing, even when there is a solo featured artist show, but as member Ann Lee Fuller notes, “Especially when the entire exhibit is a group show, we’re always delighted and surprised at what members bring in to hang and the choices this gives our viewers to see. Because we function as a group, our art has improved and expanded thanks to the continuing input from each other, and that brings a welcome excitement to each group show.”
Upcoming Longyear Gallery shows include Janice de Marino’s solo show from July 4-28, Chris Moore’s solo show from August 1-25, Ann Lee Fuller’s solo show from August 29-September 22, and Ellen Wong’s solo show from September 26-October 20th.
Longyear Gallery’s show “Twenty-Six Artists” will be on display from June 6 through June 30. Longyear Gallery is located Upstairs at The Commons, 785 Main Street, Margaretville.
