LeRoy Winchell

 Decorated World War II veteran and past Fire Chief of the M.F. Whitney Hose Company, LeRoy L. “Roy” Winchell, 93, of Phoenicia passed away peacefully on July 3, 2013 at Kingston Hospital. 
He was born in Kingston on June 6, 1920 to the late Melvin and Harriet (Kain) Winchell.  He was a resident of Phoenicia for 78 years.

His family is very proud of his service to his country during World War II. He was attached to the 1st, 5th and 7th armies. He saw action in North Africa, during the invasion of Sicily, at the Battle of Casino, on the drive on Rome, during the invasion of southern France, in the Battle of the Bulge, at the Rhine River crossing and finished his service on the Elbe River in Germany, 30 miles from Berlin. He received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, an Oak Leaf Cluster, the French Croix De Guerre and six battle stars.

He belonged to the V.F.W. Shandaken Memorial Post 2837 and was a 73-year member of the M.F. Whitney Hose Company. He retired in 1985 from the Ulster County Highway Department as a foreman after 22 and-a-half years of service. He was a past member of the Phoenicia Water Board and was a founding member of the Shandaken Recreation Commission. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving children, LeRoy (Jodi) of Norwalk, CA, Leatrice, Wanda Gale (Wyatt), and Phil of Phoenicia, Sheila Jansen (Harry) of High Falls and Ruth of Kingston, as well as beloved grandchildren, Dawn Winchell of Lebanon, NH, Patrick Winchell of Norwalk, CA, Tammy Winchell of Perris, CA, Christopher Gale of Danbury, CT, Trevor and Kyle Gale of Phoenicia, Caleb of Honolulu, HI, and Jessie Cramer of High Falls.  Also surviving are four great grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ella (Woolheater) Winchell in 1998 after 52 years of marriage; an infant daughter, Patricia in 1950 and three brothers, Robert, Walter, and Melvin.
Calling hours were held on Monday, July 8, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home, 87 Main Street, Phoenicia. 

A service to celebrate the life of Roy Winchell was held at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m. following calling hours.
