Leland Clinton Fanning, 81, of Peterboro passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, with his family by his side.
He was born May 5, 1933 in Carlisle, a son of Grant and Mae Collins Fanning, and received his education at Schoharie Central School. He served in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry during the Korean Conflict from 1954-56 as a presidential honor guard.
Leland managed HAAAPJ Farms in Roxbury from 1961 until 1973 when he became the owner and operator of Dunroving Farms in Peterboro until retiring in 1991. At that time, his son, Terry took over the farm operation. After his retirement, Leland became a volunteer driver for the Office for the Aging, logging thousands of hours and thousands of miles. Leland enjoyed many sports and wildlife photography.
Leland married Prudence Appel in 1956. He later married Jane Blosser in 2001.
Surviving are his children, Susan and Jerry Hamil of Margaretville, Peter and Darlene (Wilson) Fanning of Pratts Hollow, Terry Fanning of Peterboro, Sarah and Robert Pyle of Whitsett, NC, and Shannon Wright of Stamford, and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Fanning in 1991.
In an effort to help others, Leland donated his body to scientific research.
A memorial service with military honors was held in Morrisville on June 14, 2014.
Interment will be private in the Peterboro Cemetery at a later date.
