John E. Haney, 78, of Grand Gorge died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009.
He was born in Yuma, Az., and lived a life of travel, adventure and romance.
John first traveled, thanks to the Marine Corps, to Korea and Japan living two years in Hong Kong. John was a decorated Korean War Veteran having earned a purple heart.
He was a graduate of the University of Arizona in journalism where he edited The Wildcat. A campus newspaper. John’s career encompassed state editor for The Arizona Republic, a reporter for Associated Press and an editor of 25 years at The New York Times News Service.
John and his wife, Nancy, retired to Grand Gorge where he continued to travel and was a published novelist. At the time of his death he was working on a new novel.
A loving father to Jolynn (Steve) Musicant, Jamie (Tony) Fierro, Christine (Pat) Spillane, Stephen (Sue), Cathy (Rodney) Jensen, Matthew (Michelle) and Jimmy, brother to Peter and Lucy MacDonald and grandfather to 13 children.
John’s life was a blessing particularly to his wife and to his many friends, especially Friends of Bill.
Calling hours will be on Friday, Feb. 27 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Main Street, Roxbury.
A Mass of Christian burial to celebrate John’s life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Sacred Heart Church, 27 Harper Street, Stamford, NY.
Interment will be at Yuma, Arizona at Johnson Mortuary and Desert Lawn Memorial Park at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7.
