John Owen Finch, 73, of Sherburne, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. After a five-week stay in the hospital with double pneumonia, he is now safe in the arms of Jesus.
He was born in Margaretville Hospital December 27, 1938, the son of George Owen Jr. and Gladys Roberts Owen. His mother died from childbirth complications. John remained in the hospital for six weeks when he was adopted by Leo and Carrie Finch of Denver.
Another brother, Robert Owen, at one-and-a-half years of age was also adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Bursie Knapp of Walton.
John had a gifted voice for singing and was sometimes asked to sing at special gatherings.
Surviving are sisters, Evelyn Fingado of Pennsylvania, Margaret Sanford, Marlboro and Ferol Coonradt, Troy; a brother, Nelson Owen, Kingston; a half brother, Richard Owen, Fishersville, VA and a half sister, Doris Ramp, Seneca, South Carolina. Also surviving are several stepsisters and a stepbrother.
Survivors of John’s adoptive family are a sister, Esther Snyder, Roxbury; nephews, Albert Avery, Bath, Vincent Snyder, Roxbury and a niece, Shirley Payne, Hobart.
He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Avery and a niece, Susan Wright.
Funeral services will be held at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Grand Gorge Thursday, March 1 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ben Orvis officiating.
Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery following the service.
Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
