Hull, Svoboda named top athletes at banquet
Mitch Hull and Tess Svoboda earned the Outstanding Athlete Awards at the Margaretville Central School Athletic Banquet held May 31.
Other special presentations were made to Caleb Todd and Kellsey Buerge who were named recipients of the Henry Dietrich Sportsmanship Awards. Tess Svoboda and Sean Gauntt received Nate Dougherty Memorial Awards signifying passion and commitment to soccer.
Longtime coach and physical education teacher Julie Nash was presented with the MCS Distinguished Coaching Award. Several members of the 1977 girls’ volleyball championship team were on hand to help Ms. Nash celebrate the honor.
Recipients of the Delaware League Scholar-Athlete Awards were also honored. The awards are presented to the male and female student-athletes who maintain the highest grade-point average during each sports season. The female recipients of this year’s Delaware League Scholar-Athlete awards were: fall, Alana Moskowitz; winter, Raeann Bond and spring, Rhiannon Kearns.
The male recipients of this year’s Delaware League Scholar-Athlete awards were presented as follows: fall and winter, James Warner; and spring, Michael Conroy. The awards are presented to the male and female student-athletes who maintain the highest grade-point average during each sports season.
Players from six of the school’s teams — boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer, boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball, girls’ varsity basketball, tennis and girls’ varsity softball — were recognized with NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Awards. To achieve this status, the cumulative averages of a designated number of players had to be 90 or above.
The 20th annual MCS Athletic Banquet was held in the auditorium with about 200 students and guests in attendance.
