Here's the Scoop: Dec. 3, 2008

Celebrity bash
My mother “Peg,” had a birthday this week. So did Britney Spears. On the same day. I think the similarities end at that point.
My mother’s age is not a topic for general discussion. Or any other type of discussion. It never has been.
It can safely be said, though, that she’s a bit older than Britney.
The whole issue of sharing a birthday with someone famous is kind of fun. A quick Google search shows that my birth date is also the same one shared by track star Carl Lewis, musicians Debbie Harry (Blondie) and Fred Schneider (B-52s) and Princess Diana.
I’m not sure what this means. I never could run very fast. My musical skills are limited to lip-synching and playing bad air guitar. Thankfully, I’ve never had a chauffeur.
When Britney became a household name and international star, my mother would always mention the shared birthdays at this time of year. Honestly, if someone hadn’t told me this fact, the Peg-Britney connection might have escaped me.
The topic recently came up again and I decided that maybe I should explore this issue a bit.
First of all, there’s the singing. With today’s recording techniques, pretty much anybody can be made to sound “good.”

Singing sales
On the other hand, Peg has always had a very nice singing voice — no studio enhancements necessary. She is more of a standards singer, though, and has never come close to selling multi-platinum amounts of discs.
Peg is pretty well-known around these parts. I would bet, though, that she doesn’t have a big problem with being stalked by paparazzi. I think she’s OK with that fact.
It’s also pretty obvious that Britney has made way more music videos than Peg. That’s a good thing. No one wants to see their mother in a music video.
And speaking of children, my mother had three and never lost custody of any of them. Score a big one for Peg in that department.
In further considering any possible Peg/Britney Connection, I realized that Peg has never hung out with Madonna. Another point for Peg for that achievement.
So, what does all this “shared birthday” stuff mean anyhow?
I’m not really at liberty to go into details about how Peg celebrated her birthday this week. I guess if you’re really curious, you’ll have to purchase the National Enquirer. Just don’t believe everything you read in there. After all, it’s not like a newspaper column.
