Fleischmanns native earns doctorate degree

Fleischmanns native Abigail Davis has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Minnesota. Dr. Davis’ area of specialization is early American literature and culture; her minor field is Literacy and Rhetorical Studies.
Her dissertation, entitled “From Hawthorne to History: The Mythologizing of John Endecott,” was unanimously approved by the four members of her interdisciplinary committee, and included a recommendation that she publish the work.
Davis’ research investigates American “myths of origin” dating back to the colonial past. Her thesis presents a case study of John Endecott, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, as a dramatic example of the power of literature to impact, and sometimes alter, the historical record.
Dr. Davis has accepted a position as lecturer in English at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus, for fall 2009, and will also teach two courses at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
She is the daughter of Fran Davis of Arkville.
