Fabric dyeing demo Saturday at PFM
Halcottsville — Nat Thomas, noted local artist and textile craftsperson, will be
demonstrating some of his fabric dyeing techniques on Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market in Halcottsville.
Nat will explain the basics of dying natural fabrics using procion dyes and demonstrate some of the folding, dipping and crumpling techniques he uses to create his
distinctive hand-dyed fabrics.
He will also have on hand his dye sample
books to illustrate the range and depth of color that can be achieved using these dyes.
After graduating with a printmaking major, Nat has explored a wide variety of artistic media throughout his long career.
Turning from painting to textiles in the mid-1980s, he has produced textile creations
ranging from art and bed quilts to scarves and T-shirts. His dyeing workshops have been a regular part of summer children’s programming with
Kids in the Kaatskills.
A member of both the Longyear Gallery and the Catskill Mountain Artisans’
Guild, Nat now combines painting, collage and his textile work to create a distinctive body of work. During the demonstration, examples of
his textile work will be for sale at the Artisans’ Guild booth at the market. Following the demonstration, there will be a gallery opening of his large-scale, non-objective paintings at The Roxbury Arts Group’s Walt Meade Gallery from 2-4 p.m.
This week’s demonstrations are part of a weekly event from 10 a.m.-noon at the Pakatakan Farmers’ Market, sponsored by the Catskill Artisans’ Guild. For a complete event schedule, visit: www.pfmarket.org.
