Esther Tobin, 88, of Fleischmanns and Albany died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.
Esther was born in Brooklyn on January 29, 1925, the daughter of Daniel and Rachel Kaplan. She spent her early childhood growing up on the Red Kill Valley farm of her grandparents, Israel Isaac and Leah Kaplan. She returned to her Fleischmanns home every summer to join her large, extended family, and where her simple gifts of good will, gentle kindness, and the love of her Catskill Mountain home sustained her.
She befriended all who had the good fortune to make her acquaintance, and all were welcome in her home where she would regale them of reminiscences of life on the farm. Esther was a member of Congregation Bnai Israel in Fleischmanns where she made Bat Mitzvah at age 75. During her retirement years, she volunteered as an aide and became a part-time employee at New Visions, caring for adults with developmental disabilities. She was devoted to this opportunity, and recognized for her outstanding patience and kindness to the residents under her care.
Esther was pre-deceased by her parents; her husband, Jack, and brothers, Nathan and Seymour Kaplan.
She is survived by her children, Danielle and Ellis (Ann); grandchildren, Heather, Melissa, Rachel and Jessie, and great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Andrew, Kade and Jace. Many nieces, nephews, and Kaplan cousins whom she dearly loved also survive her.
Esther is at rest and at peace. She is returned to her beloved Catskill Mountains.
Donations in memory of Ether Tobin may be made to Temple Bnai Israel, Fleischmanns, New York 12430.
