Edwin Farrell, 93, of Horseheads, formerly of Erin, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 3, 1915 in Brooklyn, the son of the late Richard and Mary Bena Farrell.
He joined the New York City Fire Department on March 1, 1938 and retired a Lieutenant in 1973.
Edwin married the love of his life Alice Coccoli Farrell on March 19, 1939; they shared 70 wonderful years together.
Along with his wife Alice, Edwin is also survived by his children, Patricia (Richard) Nielson of Coral Springs, Fla., Marilyn (David) Rybak of Littleton, N.H., Joan Farrell (Frank Bishop) of Lakeville, Conn., Susan Farrell of Lake Placid, Karen Johnson of Erin and Edwin Michael Farrell of Margaretville; 14 grandchildren, two of whom Laura Davis and Robin Ackerley provided care for him during the last few months of his life. Also surviving are 18 great-grandchildren.
After retiring from the NYCFD, Edwin and Alice moved to Andes, where they lived for many years.
Edwin worked for Bates Real Estate running the Margaretville office.
He was active in the Catholic Church most of his life and enjoyed square dancing, gardening and his family. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Family and friends are invited to call at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira/Southport on Wednesday, July 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church Southside on Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m., followed by graveside service in LaRow Cemetery, North Van Etten.
